It is no secret that the Millennial Generation has been labelled ‘Entitled’ and ‘Demanding’ by many at the workplace.
And yet, today we see Organisational Leaders eagerly wanting to learn more about what the Millennials really want from the workplace.
Partly because Millennials are forming the majority at the workplace. With 1.2 Million Millennials working in Singapore alone, a study from NUS – Centre of Future-Ready Graduates estimate they will form 75% of the working population by 2030.
So the influence naturally follows the numbers in this case.
Also due to our world being constantly disrupted with Technology, and who else better to embrace disruption with Technology than the Millennials?
So the burning questions on Organisation Leaders’ Minds are “What do Millennials want at the workplace?”, “How can I get them to stay in my team and organisation for more than 2 years?”
Based on my research and surveys across various organisations as well as through consulting with multiple organisational leaders within diverse industries, I have identified the 7 Fundamentals that organisations can focus on – and have put it into the Infographic as shown.
Now it is not necessary for organisations to have all Fundamentals implemented as policies and directives at once.
To keep the Millennials engaged, think ‘Video Game’ Strategies. Like in every video game, there are multiple challenges that one has to go through to unlock specific tools, powers or weapons.
Likewise, tie in the ‘benefits’ that Millennials can enjoy with these Fundamentals with ‘loyalty to the company’ and ‘peak performance’. Do this at various stages of progression.
This will also allow you to observe the potential leaders who can make an impact with their work.
Millennials love a challenge, and they will readily work their way up if you as a leader can clearly show them the direction to charge towards.
Engaging the Millennials within your organisation will save you from constant staff turnover that leads to ‘bleeding profits’. Engage them well and they have the potential to take your organisation to the next level.
